CAKE Wins the Fennia Prize for the Kalk OR Electric Motorcycle
The Design Forum Finland recognizes CAKE and its off-road performance-oriented Kalk OR model with this prestigious design award.
– CAKE, the Swedish manufacturer of lightweight electric motorcycles, today announced that it received the Fennia Prize for its high-performance, off-road electric motorbike, the Kalk OR. The Fennia Prize is granted every two years by the Design Forum Finland, Fennia Group, Elo, and the Finnish Patent and Registration Office to recognize companies and organizations that use design strategically in their business operations to enhance competitiveness and international growth.
"Whether it's about reason, rationality, concern or functionality embraced by deliberate and aspiring form, there is no other country that has inspired the core of CAKE’s design more than Finland,” commented founder and CEO of CAKE, Stefan Ytterborn. “Without the Saarinens, Aalto (and Aino, too), Frank, Wirkkala, Hopea, Bryk and many more, CAKE’s motorbikes wouldn´t appear the way they do. Thank you Finland and thank you the jury of the Fennia Prize--one of the finest design awards there is.”
The Fennia competition and prize were first established by Fennia and Design Forum in 1989 to promote insightful design and the competitive edge of companies. The prize, called Pro Finnish Design, was first awarded in 1990. The Fennia Group and Elo Mutual Pension Insurance manage as partners the Fennia Prizes with the purpose of promoting entrepreneurship, company growth, and the creation of healthy working communities. The values of trailblazing, interaction, meaningfulness, and sustainability, are reflected in the selected winners.
Built with a purpose to inspire people to contribute to speeding up the journey towards a zero-emission society by combining excitement and responsibility, the all-electric high-performance off-road Kalk OR motorcycle is designed for exploration and discovery. It is strongly influenced by downhill and enduro mountain bikes in both the feel and handling, and the design takes into account the two sports’ geometry, suspension, and components.
With a focus on design, performance and innovation, every single component of the Kalk had to be custom-built, resulting in numerous patents pending. The CAKE Kalk proves electric vehicles can still be aesthetically pleasing while being eco-friendly.
The Kalk OR retails for $13,000 USD, while the street-legal Kalk&, which is designed for commuting and exploring, retails for $14,000 USD. Two new models joined the Kalk series in 2020, the Kalk INK which retails for $9,500 and its street-legal sibling, Kalk INK SL, which retails for $10,500. All models are available for order on ridecake.com.
While the current situation may interrupt the Design Forum Finland and Fennia Prize exhibition, it is currently slated to take place from August 17 - September 6, 2020 at the Exhibition Center WeeGee in Espoo, Finland.
