Technical

We have different categories of electric motorbikes that serve different needs. The bikes in the category “Explore & Commute” are street-legal in the USA and all European Union countries. You will have to register bikes in this category according to your state and/or country regulations.

For our street-legal models, you will need either a motorcycle or moped license depending on the model. The street-legal motorcycles are equivalent to a 125cc and require a motorcycle license. The Ösa Lite is a street-legal moped which is equivalent to a 50cc. It typically only requires a driver’s license in the U.S.A., but please check your state regulations. You can also call us for assistance.

The off-road bikes in the Category “Race” or “Freeride” are not street-legal and do not come with lights and indicators. Please check your local regulations on registering off-road vehicles.

The app

Yes, the current app can be used free of charge.

On first use, open up the app and create an account. After you are loged in connect your bike with the connectivity ID, you can find the connectivity ID in one of your onboarding mails from Cake. When the app asks for permission to pair via Bluetooth, press “accept”.

NOTE: Keep your connectivity ID in a secure location as it together with the app functions as a key. If you decide to sell or pass on your Cake to someone else remember to pass the connectivity ID on as well.

The Lock and Unlock functions are only available when the bike is connected to the phone via Bluetooth.

NOTE: On Kalk and Ösa the lock/unlock feature requires the bike to be switched on, kill switch to be in drive position and display switched on.

On the Makka the battery must be connected.

On the Åik the battery must be connected.

When the bike PIN code is changed then you need to insert it again via the App to control the Lock function.

The last position of your bike is sent to the app via GSM so the location is not updated with the Bluetooth connection and might change with a slight delay.

The location of the bike is updated only when the bike is moved.

NOTE: The position is tracked even for a locked bike and even with the main battery removed. The bikes internal tracker I equipped with a backup battery that will keep your bike connected for up to 30 days even without the main battery.

The percentage of the battery and the charging status may be different when the bluetooth is connected and when it is not connected as without bluetooth connection the information is sent from the bike to your app via GSM, which might not update instantly but in some minutes, whereas Bluetooth updates information instantly.

Track ride is using your phone GPS to track the ride so be sure to carry your phone with you when tracking a ride.

If you are unable to connect your bike to the app then try following these steps:

  1. Close the app
  2. Open your phone's Bluetooth settings and find your Bike under your Bluetooth devices
  3. Click the “Info” button.
  4. Press “Forget This Device”
  5. Turn Bluetooth OFF and then back ON under settings
  6. Open the app and try to connect again.

When you change the custom brake mode slider then be sure to also change to brake mode BC on your Ösa or Kalk& again in order for the customised sliders to apply. On Makka, changes affects all ride modes. On Bukk all brake modes are configurable in the app.

Custom ride mode is accessed on your bike by choosing:

Kalk OR: Set the dial to “Ride mode 3” or “Ride mode 1” depending on model year.

Kalk&/Kalk INK&: Choose “Ride mode C” on the display

Makka: Choose “Ride mode 2”

Bukk: On the Bukk all ride modes are configurable in the app.

Åik: On the Åik only cadence setting is possibly to adjust, the cadence affect all ride modes selected using the button on the handlebar.

When you change the custom ride mode sliders then be sure to also change the ride mode on your bike again in order for the customised sliders to apply.

Retrofitting a bike without a module is not possible. The CAKE Connect is  included on all bikes produced from mid 2022 and onwards.

Yes. If your bike has an installed CAKE Connect module that is activated, your bike is connected over GSM which enables CAKE to install and update the firmware Over The Air.

Currently, the app is available with all functionality for all users.

Yes, the app uses both cellular and Bluetooth connectivity to function. Some features are available through Bluetooth connection and your app will still be valuable without cellular connectivity.

Yes, available to buy in our shop

When passing on your Cake you need to remove the bike from your account (or remove the account entirely). After this the new user can use the Connectivity ID to add the bike again.

Battery & charging

You can use your home’s regular 120V/220V outlet to charge your bike. Always read the charging manual before charging.

You can charge your battery at any percentage of charge. When charging the bike, do the following steps:

  1. Make sure that the battery is connected to the bike (both connectors from battery, both the big red one and the small yellow one)
  2. Disconnect the killswitch
  3. Turn on the master switch (pointing upwards)
  4. Plug the charger into the bike (charger connector can be found under the bike, close to the triple clamps)
  5. Lastly, plug the charger into the outlet (120V or 220V)
  6. Do not interrupt the charging process. Let the battery charge fully. This may take longer than expected the first time while the cells balance.
  • When the charger is connected, it will show a red light. When the charging is done, it will light in green. When the charging is finished, don’t forget to put the rubber cap on the connector, not to break it during riding.
  • Never use the charger in any other application than with the CAKE bike.
  • Never use any other charger than the original CAKE charger.
  • Never have the kill switch on the handlebar connected as the bike can be turned on and ridden while the charger is connected. This can cause severe injuries to people or properties.
  1. Charging cycles: The average commute is 11km daily / 200 days a year. The battery life in charging cycles, according to this calculation would be 8 years or more.
  2. You can ride when it's cold but store and charge them at "indoor temperatures".

YES, all our new batteries are compatible with older versions of bike models.

In order to keep your bike safe it is recommended to use an external lock that is recommended for motorcycles. When leaving your bike on the street, always turn the bike off and remove the key and the kill switch from the bike. Lock the steering lock by turning the handlebar all the way to the left and insert the key into the steering lock and turn the key. You will feel how the handlebar will be locked to that position, so you can’t ride the bike. The steering lock is found under the triple clamps between the fork legs.

Always store the bike indoors away from sunshine to avoid unnecessary aging or discoloration. Never store your bike in below 10° C, if you are unable to store the bike in temperature above that, remove the battery and bring it inside. It’s recommended to keep your bike inside during if the outside temperature ranges outside of +2°C to +35°C (36 F to 95 F

Riding in the cold is not a problem, but for optimum performance don't leave the battery out in the cold. You can store and charge the battery at indoor temperatures.

Yes! All CAKE batteries are hot-swappable, meaning users can remove, store and charge the battery separately to the bike.

We recommend maintaining your bike’s battery charge at between 50%-75% and turning the kill switch off.

General

The Kalk Series is close in performance and user matrix to dirt bikes but there are differences.

All Kalk models are a power to weight ratio optimization pursuit building a chassis as light and lively as possible and around the electric drivetrain. This is in contrast to the normal procedure of merely swapping from combustion to electric in a gasoline chassis (which is extremely heavy).

The Kalk Series is engineered around the electric drivetrain to maximize the riding performance. The electric drive train is completely different from an internal combustion engine, with benefits for each side. An electric drivetrain includes a solid battery, electric motor, and a controller, and features instant torque from zero, direct-drive. No need for a clutch. There are fewer moving parts, low tinkering, no fumes, no sounds, no filters, no oils, tunable riding modes, and regen braking along with being highly responsive and having great throttle control and swappable batteries.

Building light, electric, uncompromising motorbikes for the ultimate off-road experience requires components engineered for it. Combining off-the-shelf parts from the MTB and motorbike world would lead to a diminished riding experience by increasing the number of parts, bolts, tinkering, welds, and an impaired geometry. As mentioned, the MTB components are too weak for a 69+kg (Kalk OR) motorbike and the MX parts are too heavy. They do not serve the specifics of the electric drivetrain.

The same thing goes for traditionally designed electric dirt bikes engineered and optimized for a combustion engine where the ICE (internal combustion engine) is simply swapped for an electric drivetrain, which not particularly efficient.

The Ösa model is a high-performance utility scooter. These bikes are meant to serve their users as best friends and it is all about transportation: Going to work with a laptop, bringing groceries on the way back home, taking your kids or a friend for a ride, getting the planks from the woodshop, or bringing leisure gear on your adventure, whether it’s a surfboard or a pair of skis. The reasons and options are endless.

See what people and professionals say about the bikes in our riding reviews.

All our range estimates are from the WMTC-II which is a test the bike is doing when it's being homologated (certified for street use) All bikes does the same so the number does not come from us, it's the number we got from the test.

The range is set depending on how big your battery is (measured in kWh) and how strong your motor is (measured in kW). Your way of riding the bike effects how far the range will be. The top range we set from what we call "mixed city riding" which means that the range in real life can be both shorter and longer depending on the speed, hills, weight and temperature. Thanks to the CAKE components, we can have small batteries but with the longest possible range.

Heavy loading will effect the range, so if you want to maximise the range make sure to travel light.

plan your riding, take advantage from the brake modes to recharge the battery while braking, keep the battery inside or in warm temperature when it's cold outside.

Anti Poaching

Poaching is the illegal capturing, and killing of wild animals.

To get a better overview, this is how WWF explains it:

“Some examples of illegal wildlife trade are well known, such as poaching of elephants for ivory and tigers for their skins and bones. However, countless other species are similarly overexploited, from marine turtles to timber trees. Not all wildlife trade is illegal. Wild plants and animals from tens of thousands of species are caught or harvested from the wild and then sold legitimately as food, pets, ornamental plants, leather, tourist ornaments, and medicine. Wildlife trade escalates into a crisis when an increasing proportion is illegal and unsustainable—directly threatening the survival of many species in the wild.”

Text from: worldwildlife.org/threats/illegal-wildlife-trade

Southern African Wildlife College, the key partner in this project to develop the best bikes optimized for all the needs for improved wildlife conservation.

wildlifecollege.org.za

The intention is to optimize the bikes towards the best possible bike for anti-poaching purposes. Together with the SAWC, there is an ongoing feedback loop. We’re listening and improving while the bike is out in the field. The first delivered bikes are already much appreciated as a tool in the field. The intention over time is to set a new standard for wildlife conservation, a bike that ticks all boxes, 100% optimized and developed by the ones who make the difference, where the illegal wildlife actions are committed. We’re excited about the progress so far, and very much looking forward to the next steps, continue the optimization, learn and become better.

This initiative is based on where CAKE and selected partners that together gathering competencies and expertise to together start to improve a new solution for wildlife protection. Here are some examples:

  • Always running, never out of gas.
The inaccessible gas might cause that vehicles standing still, thanks to the mobile solar power, the Kalk AP is always on the roll, with the good range of up to +3 hours riding, enabling rangers to increase presence and effectiveness to counteract illegal wildlife actions.
  • Silent operations.
Moving without drawing attention. The lack of sound. Noise is a major drawback, the roaring combustion engines, alerting poachers miles away. Moving without catching attention is an important step towards improved conservation.
  • The fastest way in the outback.
Motorbikes are the fastest way to move in the field. Kalk AP features a top speed of 90km/h / 56mph, combined with the ultra-low weight makes the speed superior compared to other bikes, in narrow and technical formats, often the situations where motorbikes today are used. Another plus is the easiness of riding, no gears, if you can ride a bicycle not much training is required, enabling more people to be out protecting land on motorbikes.
  • Less maintenance.
No filters, liquids, spark plugs, and few moving parts make Kalk AP easy to handle and limited service is needed.
  • Low running costs.
No needs to buy gasoline, or pay for transport of the gasoline. Gasoline is either brought in by truck or helicopter depending on location. The more electric the fleets become, the more budget can be used elsewhere to support various necessities to improve anti-poaching, gear, salaries for rangers, and more.
  • By rangers for rangers.
The bike has been developed in close collaboration with the Southern African Wildlife College and the CAKE product team, and the platform will be optimized by rangers over time. The goal is the best bike possible for anti-poaching. It’s all about increasing efficiency, convenience, and achieving better results thanks to the bike. The development refers to everything from software to accessories and everything in between.
  • Mfana Xaba, Anti-poaching team leader:
”The petrol bikes we’ve used previously have all been loud, heavy, and expensive to keep running in these areas. The CAKE bikes are quiet, which makes it easier for us to approach poachers undetected. We hope this collaboration will result in more effective anti-poaching in our region and we are really excited to start using the bikes in the wild.”
  • Kalk AP is one of many important tools.
The Kalk AP is one important tool, in the anti-poaching toolbox.
Just as a combustion engine 4x4 car (still) is an important component, the Kalk AP is one of many important necessities for successful anti-poaching operations. The Kalk AP will be ridden side by side with traditional combustion engine motorbikes and other vehicles. The vehicle is chosen and used depending on the situation. The advantage with EV’s in the wild is clear, off-the-grid powered, enabling rangers to roll 24/7, always ready without the risk that the fleets are out of fuel and become unusable.

From the Goal Zero power bank to the bike battery it takes approx 3 hours (0-100%)

Yes, the bikes are donated with 1 extra battery, meaning that one battery is in the bike, the additional battery is on charge. Hot Swapping batteries takes about 60 seconds.

CAKE is donating the bikes to the SAWC. The SAWC is choosing where the bikes make the most sense at the moment and might move bikes between parks. SAWC is today working with 127 national parks all over Africa.

Nothing new. No matter what is powering the vehicle, when a vehicle runs out of gas or gets out of battery the situation is identical.

Bringing a spare battery or spare gas can, takes the same space, similar weight. The amount of time to hot-swap a battery or re-fuel the gas tank is also a similar procedure. The beauty and potential with solar-powered electric motorbikes in the bush. It becomes close to a renewable perpetual machine, increasing efficiency and that make sure the bikes always are running.

A number of bikes are donated to start the project. Every order of a Ösa AP, Kalk AP and AP merchandise supports the project together with Southern African Wildlife College, strengthening its efforts against poaching. In your purchase, 3 percent of the proceeds goes directly to the project together with the SAWC.

The Makka :work and Ösa :work models both have USB and 12V power outputs, which allows off-grid charging of gadgets like phones, laptops and tablets. To power heavy-duty electronics like drills, welding machines and more, a power converter is needed, which can easily be added to your order.

The Dometic box at max heat is at 120W, the Ösa :work battery is at 3,75kWh (3750W) which means that the box, at max heat, can run by the battery for ≈31 hours. That said no matter the battery, the range impact from powering the box while riding is very limited.
