The Zero Cotton Cake + reDEW Jacket is made from Zero Cotton fabrics, entirely made from 100% wood fibers from FSC-certified forests in Europe. It’s a 2/1 construction deriving from workwear, which makes it hard-wearing and compact. The indigo dye means that the jacket will be unique after wear, your every move will determine the wear pattern on your jacket and depict your life. By time, wear and wash, the colour of the jacket will become lighter as the indigo dye on the surface goes away and the undyed core of the yarn becomes more visible. Trust us when we say that the Zero Cotton Cake + reDEW Jacket will only become more beautiful with wear and the more you wear it, but less you wash it, the stronger your wear pattern and contrast will be!

In terms of washing at home, please consider it as a jacket and wash as rarely as you can. Not because the jacket can’t take it, but because it does less harm to the planet and becomes more beautiful with age. Once you most wash it, use 40* C and make sure to AVOID SOFTENER. That’s the only area where wood fibers differ from cotton, they become really soft with the use of softener. Once you take them out of the washing machine, hang to dry and you will see that they have slightly more of a paper touch to them, but that will go away by wear, don’t worry!

The buttons used for the Zero Cotton Cake + reDEW Jacket are also unique. We used a “new” technique which is thousands of years old, namely pure copper without any galvanization. We did this to make recycling and upcycling possible and also to save all the chemicals used in galvanization. Another added value is that the button will age with wear, each one individually and with your personal expression, all depending on how you wear your jacket.

Cotton is one of the dirtiest fibers on the planet and we humans love to wear it. Compared to conventional cotton, the Zero Cotton Cake + reDEW Jacket saves approx 7000 liters of water by using 100% wood fiber. Here are a few facts about cotton:

1) Irrigation to cotton fields kill entire eco-systems, most often by saltification and makes the risk of catastrophes greater in heavy rains. At reDEW, we believe that people would be a lot happier if they could drink the water, use it for growing food and to re-establish part of the eco-systems that have disappeared. The trees used for the Zero Cotton Cake + reDEW Jacket aren’t grown with irrigation and even if they were, they grow in areas where water is a commodity, not a matter of life or death.

2) Pesticides are used heavily in cotton fields and directly put humans and animals health as well as entire water systems at risk. Cotton alone uses at least 16% of all pesticides on the planet, something which trees simply don’t need.

3) Fertilizers are used at great extent in cotton fields, but like pesticides, they rarely stay on the field but spread with water to lakes and rivers where, as an example, algae grow faster and oxygen levels fall which has severe effects on the entire eco-system.

WATER ON EARTH

97,5% Salt water
2,5% Fresh water = 2/3 glaciers and permanent snow + 1/3 water in the ground and only about 0,3% in lakes and rivers

70% of the freshwater used is for irrigation (high income countries = 40%, low income countries = 90%)
20% is for industries
10% is for household usage

Cotton stands for 7% of the total irrigation, but in many countries, cotton is the biggest consumer of irrigation. 70% of all cotton is grown with irrigation. Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkey and Australia rely on irrigation. China, USA and India uses 30-40% irrigation
Cotton consumes 550-950 liter/m2 field area which equals to 7000-29000 liter/kg

In 1980 we used 3 km3 for cotton fields and in 2000 it had increased to 4 km3
When too much freshwater is taken from the ground, the risk of saltification is huge. Big areas in the US are now unusable and the Aral Sea collapsed solely due to irrigation for cotton.

Cotton stands for 2,5% of the total areal of usable fields, but uses 11% of the chemicals (25% of insecticides alone). This means that cotton pollutes the water used for growing it.
