What is CAKE?

CAKE is a Swedish electric bike company born out of a passion for gravity sports, and on a mission to develop high-quality, sustainable performance products. CAKE realizes that the development of electric drivetrains will bring positive change to the future of motorbikes and that our customers appreciate this too.

The CAKE category:

The lightweight electric off-road motorbike segment started with small, dedicated manufacturers assembling and customizing standard parts from the world of cycling and motorbikes. These hybrids, equipped with off-the-shelf motors, batteries and controllers have helped to define a new direction that changes the future of riding. The characteristics of an electric drivetrain, as opposed to a combustion engine, brings a number of exciting changes.

The weight aspect is one. A dramatic reduction in weight, compared to a regular combustion bike, enables snappy and lively rides. The electric drivetrain makes riding more accessible for everyone regardless of their physical condition and experience. Everyone can comfortably handle the bike. The fact that it’s almost completely silent boosts the riding experience and serves for absolute presence and focus while out exploring. It also enhances the level of respect towards our surroundings and those sharing the space with us – whether they’re fellow hikers, wildlife or even your neighbours when riding around your backyard track.

Clean, electric energy has numerous advantages. The fact that there’s no pollution or fumes (see CAKEworks tab) and that you can charge your bike with renewable energy (or even with solar panels from CAKE) through the lifetime of the bike, is true evidence of sustainability. Since there are no fluids, grease, gasoline or oil, the bike doesn’t suck up dirt like a magnet, meaning it’s more like a bicycle.

Spending hours in the garage is history as maintenance is very limited. Compared to a combustion engine, there are very few moving parts and to take the level of simplicity further the drive train has direct drive. The level of maintenance is marginal. Clean the bike, you might need to change a tire if you get a flat, make sure to service the brakes like on a MTB, check your suspension from time to time and just charge it, for more riding.

What´s the approach?

No compromises: Everything, from frame, to wheels, components, suspension and drive train have been specifically engineered and manufactured to reach the intended level of performance in riding, durability and overall quality.

What are the product characteristics?

Light, clean and quiet. All bikes are developed to promote performance, trail/enduro and free riding in the back country, leaving nothing to chance. The kinematics, size and geometry together with precision construction and careful use of materials, make for an agile, light, torquey and exciting experience.

Build:

To simplify maintenance and increase use and excitement, the bike is built in a modular way like LEGO, with the ambition of reducing the number of moving parts and minimize complexity.

Here are a few examples:
If a drivetrain part malfunctions that whole part can be replaced. The rear sprocket is large due to the use of direct drive, which reduces the number of moving parts, yet still produces amazing levels of torque. The bike itself can be serviced just like a bicycle.

What´s the intended use?

Noise and fume-free bikes that consider the environment, wildlife and fellow individuals that share the backcountry, opens up for more sustainable, respectful and active discovery. On a par with the aspect of backcountry exploration, a track concept is being developed for training and racing in urban/suburban locations. Aside from the above, being electric and digital, the pre-set riding modes suit anyone from an off-road World Champion, to the inexperienced rider.

So what’s the CAKE take on the above?
We wanted to maximize the advantages with the electrical drive train, to develop an industrially manufactured, performance off-road ride, leaving nothing at chance.

That said, we have tested everything there is out there, having had 100’s of people testing and sharing the experience with us. Anybody from international pro-athletes in MX, DH MTB and Dirt biking, to men and women between 12 and 75 years old with no prior experience.

We realized we had to start from scratch.

The battery:

To support the CAKE mission; to inspire a transition towards a zero-emission society, there are some challenges. With regard to batteries, the issues are clear while the development is fast. Battery cells are efficient and have long multiple lifetimes, for different uses and will eventually be recycled. But battery cell manufacturing can involve non-sustainable processes.

Battery performance will increase rapidly in the coming years as new technologies arrive. The increasing demand of batteries, together with the strive for better performance and more sustainable solutions accelerate the development. (The process is in full swing and at CAKE we can’t wait for our friends at @northvolt energy cells to hit the market)
The increased use is pushing the limits and we can expect cells that charge faster, have higher energy density, more charging cycles and better overall performance.

This is just the beginning, whenever a new cell occurs that’s either greener or better performing CAKE will use it. CAKE-batteries are hot swappable on all models which means that whenever a new battery standard is introduced from CAKE, they can be used on current bikes, from earlier generations. So no need to get a new bike.
Other topics regarding batteries where CAKE is active include second life, recycling and leasing or rent solutions.

The Kalk Model:

CAKEs first series of bikes

The Kalk model, is the first of a range of new models to come. The focus here has been off-road performance and innovation. The ride is strongly influenced by DH and Enduro MTBs, in terms of geometry, suspension, stance, components and handling.

As there wasn’t anything off-the-shelf to support the category, every single component had to be developed from a clean sheet to support the intended level of quality and durability. This included: sizing, geometry and engineering of axles, hubs, rims, cockpit and suspension, as well as building and customizing the different parts of the drivetrain together with the development of a whole new chassis.

The Ösa Model:

The ÖSA, apart from being a light, clean and quiet electric motorcycle, derives from the diversity of work and differentiated needs together with the urge to serve for new means of transportation, towards a zero emission future.

The working bench, around since ever, to serve people making things, has been the inspiration to the uni-bar, modular, clamp-on, off-the-grid system, constituting the ÖSA.

Transportation and commuting

The obligation to change, to avoid an environmental melt down is shared by all and everyone.
Transportation is one of the evident ones, where combustion vehicles are being replaced by electric, gasoline and diesel are being banned and cars will be excluded from the urban landscape.

The differentiated needs

The variety of work and need for transportation has never been greater. The needs in terms of what to bring and carry along is a palette, from the office worker to the craftsman.
The roads towards destination varies from highways to trails.

The electric and modular utility commuter with off-road capabilities and integrated power station.

Off the grid independence

Thanks to the powerful battery with multiple outlets, it is about a power station on wheels, taking you to wherever, to do your thing, independently off the grid:

  • The carpenter or gardener can bring and charge their power tools anywhere to execute their work, off the grid.
  • The rock guitarist or DJ may do a gig or a forest rave, bringing their gear in the middle of nowhere.
  • UPS or the pizza delivery may execute clean last mile deliveries in cities around the world.
