CAKE and Tom Dixon Announce Partnership to Get London Moving Again
The Coal Office will utilize CAKE’s Ösa model of electric motorcycles to make clean and quiet deliveries to individuals and businesses throughout central London.
CAKE, the Swedish manufacturer of lightweight electric motorcycles, and Tom Dixon, the global lighting, furniture, and home accessories brand, today announced an expanded brand partnership with The Coal Office, Tom Dixon’s headquarters for experiments, innovation, and collaborations in London. As the first step in an ongoing and multi-faceted collaboration, The Coal Office team will utilize CAKE’s electric utility motorbike, the Ösa, to execute package deliveries from The Coal Office’s retail shops as well as takeout orders from the Coal Office restaurant.
“When the pandemic first hit, London ground to an almost complete halt. The city was not just empty, depressed, and scared, but also cleaner and quieter. When Ösa arrived, it seemed to suit a post-pandemic future; it’s more adaptive to unexpected circumstances. We immediately began using it as a transport service for our food, for our product, and also for daily delivery to the homeless shelter at the end of each day,” remarked Tom Dixon, Creative Director of his eponymous global design brand. “The utility aesthetic and modular construction of the moto mirrors our current design thinking and we are proud to partner with CAKE to present Ösa for the first time in this big and noisy metropolis - one that desperately needs to move into a more sustainable healthier and electric future.”
The connection between Tom Dixon and Stefan Ytterborn, founder and CEO of CAKE, traces itself back to Milan during the early 1990s where Tom Dixon and Stefan Ytterborn were a part of the city’s booming design scene, each making his mark on the international scene. Ever since, Tom and Stefan have maintained a connection around their mutual interest in design and a commitment to sustainability, social responsibility, and product relevancy.
“Collaborating with Tom Dixon and his Coal Office project is an honor. It highlights the many common values shared between us, with the primary ambition to bring purpose in what we create,” commented CAKE’s founder and CEO, Stefan Ytterborn. “While CAKE is rooted in backcountry and off-road performance, our street legal models speak to the urban need for clean and efficient modes of transportation for local exploring, durability, work, and fun. By partnering with Tom and his group with the Ösa utility vessel, we springboard CAKE’s presence in London and truly begin the UK endeavor.”
Apart from being a light, clean, and quiet electric motorcycle, the Ösa is derived from the diversity of work and differentiated needs of the customer. What to bring and what to carry varies greatly between the office worker and the craftsman, and the roads toward the destination include highways and trails and everything in between. As a result, CAKE’s solution was to build an electric and modular utility commuter vehicle that serves a wider range of riders with off-road capabilities.
Heavily influenced by the workbench, the Ösa design features a large gray bar extending out from underneath the seat. This uni-bar, modular, clamp-on system serves as the heart of the Ösa, allowing users to attach baskets, bags, tools, and more to create over 1,000 different possible configurations. It also features a powerful battery with multiple outlets, meaning the Ösa doubles as a power station on wheels, enabling the rider to be completely independent, off-the-grid.
The Ösa Lite, the scooter model, has a top speed of 30 mph and starts at $6,500 USD, while the Ösa+, the motorcycle model, boasts a top speed of 60mph+ starts at $8,500 USD. Both are available for order worldwide on ridecake.com.
Additional collaboration between Tom Dixon and CAKE will take place during Tom Dixon’s OCTAGON event, taking place at The Coal Office during London Design Week, September 12 - 20th, 2020.
